Housing allowance

As a student, you are normally not entitled to housing benefit (according to Section 20 Paragraph 2 Wohngeldgesetz). Your rental costs are granted as a lump sum by the BAföG.

However, there may be exceptions, for example if:

• You are not eligible for BAföG
• You are only entitled to BAföG as an interest-bearing bank loan
• You live in so-called mixed households or
• You study with children

To clarify whether you are entitled to housing benefit, please come to your social counseling service or contact the relevant housing benefit office directly.
